Portugal Surf Trip Packing List: Aljezur & Vicentina

Surf trip packing list for Portugal: surf essentials, seasonal clothing, sun and tech, documents, first aid, and what to skip when you rent board + wetsuit.

Packing for Portugal is about season and whether you fly with boards or rent locally. With us you skip the bulky surf kit — you still want layers, sun protection, and a few coast-specific extras. This checklist targets Aljezur and the Costa Vicentina, not generic tropical surf packing.

Seasonal wetsuit logic: wetsuit guide Portugal. Board choice: what surfboard should I rent.

Why renting lightens luggage: Airlines charge boards; baggage handlers bend them. Our Full package is €35/day, €120/week, €199/two weeks — compare that to excess fees and stress. Packages.

Clothing: summer vs winter on the west coast

June–September: T-shirts, shorts, light jumper for windy evenings, rain shell (yes, it rains sometimes), flip-flops + trainers for rocky paths.

April–May & October: Add fleece, jeans or joggers, warmer jacket for post-surf; you will feel cool in 4/3 wetsuits when the wind blows.

November–March: 5/3 territory — pack beanie, warm layers, waterproof jacket, gloves if you chill fast (most locals skip surf gloves, but you do you).

Footwear: Paths to some beaches are steep or stony — something with grip beats smooth-soled fashion trainers.

Sun and skin

The Atlantic sun reflects off the water — burns happen fast on a four-hour session.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen for face (zinc sticks are popular).
  • SPF lip balm.
  • Sunglasses + strap for driving the coast road.
  • Hat for beach hangs.
  • Rash vest optional under wetsuit in summer for neck protection.

Tech and power

ItemWhy
EU Type C/F plug adapterStandard for Portugal
Power bankLong beach days, spotty signal areas

Documents and money

  • Passport / ID (post-Brexit UK: passport rules apply — check before travel).
  • Driving licence + rental voucher.
  • Travel insurance details — surf cover if you want real peace of mind.
  • One credit + one debit — Visa/Mastercard widely accepted; cash still handy in tiny village bars.

First aid and recovery

Keep it proportionate — you are not expedition trekking.

  • Plasters, antiseptic, ibuprofen (personal tolerance permitting).
  • Ear drops if you are prone to swimmer’s ear.
  • Strapping tape for ribs / feet if you are injury-prone.
  • Lip salve, throat lozengesair-con + salt air dries you out.

What NOT to bring

  • Huge hard boards if a rental solves your week — unless you are training for something specific.
  • Multiple steamer wetsuits for a short trip — one personal suit + our rental is usually enough laundry pain.
  • Valuables you do not use — hire cars and beach car parks reward minimalism.
  • Banned or risky items — check airline sports equipment rules before you tape a quiver shut.

Surf camp vs going independent

Packing changes slightly — camps sometimes bundle lessons and gear. Surf camp vs rental compares the vibe and logistics.

FAQ

Do I need booties in Aljezur?

Usually no in summer; optional in winter on rocky entries at some spots. Most people surf barefoot in wetsuits year-round here.

Should I pack a towel for every day?

Quick-dry microfibre — one or two rotate fine if you hang them.

Can I travel carry-on only if I rent gear?

Often yes for a week — clothes layers matter more than gadgets.
