Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a different sport from surfing — slower strokes, different balance, and on flat water it is closer to a canoe workout than a session at Arrifana. Around Aljezur, the river is often the best classroom: sheltered from ocean swell, visually calm, and full of birds.
We do not rent SUP boards at Surf Rental Aljezur. Our fleet is soft-top surfboards (6'6–8'6) and wetsuits only. For SUP hire or lessons, contact local outfitters in Aljezur town or coastal operators — search “SUP Aljezur” and read recent reviews; seasonal openings vary.
Why the Aljezur river works for beginners
The Ribeira de Aljezur offers flat water away from breaking waves — ideal for first strokes, turning practice, and learning how wind affects you without swell noise. Morning conditions are often glassier before the breeze picks up.
Dress for immersion — even warm air can mean cool water. A wetsuit is not silly on SUP in shoulder seasons; thickness matches surf seasons: 3/2 mm in summer, 4/3 mm in spring/autumn, 5/3 mm in winter. We rent suits if you need one without renting a surfboard.
Ocean SUP: only on calm days
Taking a SUP on the open sea near Costa Vicentina cliffs looks dramatic in photos — and can go wrong fast when wind, current, or groundswell builds. If whitecaps appear, stay off. If offshore wind blows you out to sea, paddling back is exhausting.
Rule of thumb: ocean SUP here is for experienced paddlers on mild days, close to sheltered coves, with a leash, PFD where required, and someone who knows local conditions. When in doubt, stay on the river or book a guided session.
Wildlife from the board
Kingfishers, herons, and waders are common along the river margins. Otters are occasional — thrilling, rare, and legally protected; keep distance and never chase wildlife with a board.
The estuary toward Amoreira connects to bigger water dynamics — currents strengthen with tide; treat it as intermediate territory unless you know the line.
Combining SUP with a surf trip
Many travellers mix flat-day SUP with wave days. Shoulders tired from paddling a surfboard? SUP uses overlapping muscles but different intensity — still schedule rest. Our one-week Aljezur itinerary ideas help balance activities.
If your main goal is waves, prioritise what surfboard to rent and forecast reading — SUP is a bonus, not a replacement for surf coaching.
What to bring (if you rent elsewhere)
- Sunscreen and hat — reflected water doubles exposure.
- Dry bag for keys and phone.
- Water shoes for muddy put-ins.
- Leash — always on moving water.
Lessons vs DIY
First hour on a SUP: lessons save embarrassment and protect the riverbank from zigzag crashes. Instructors cover paddle length, stance, sweep strokes, and falling away from the fin.
Tides, wind, and river flow
Tidal push can turn gentle river sections into moving water — beginners may not notice until the return leg feels harder. Check tide times alongside wind forecasts; an offshore breeze on the ocean can still funnel upriver in confusing ways.
Summer thermals sometimes build onshore wind by midday; morning paddles are usually calmer. In winter, rain-swollen rivers run faster and carry debris — dress warmly and avoid flood conditions.
Respect for other users
Fishermen, kayakers, and swimmers share the Aljezur water. Pass wide, reduce wake near small craft, and avoid noise that disturbs birds nesting in riparian scrub. The Natural Park ethos is low impact — leave put-ins cleaner than you found them.
FAQ
Why don’t you rent SUPs?
We specialise in surfboards and wetsuits delivered to your door. SUP is a different kit stack and insurance picture; local specialists handle it better.
Can I SUP the same beaches I surf?
Only when sea state is genuinely mild. Surf beaches with shore break can snap a paddle or injure a beginner — ask locally each day.
Is the river polluted after rain?
Runoff can reduce water quality temporarily. Wait a day or two after heavy rain if you are sensitive — municipal guidance may post advisories.
Do I need a licence?
Rules change; guided operators handle compliance. For independent paddling, check current Portuguese maritime guidance for your craft class and PFD requirements.
Flat water sounds boring — worth it?
If you want quiet nature and balance training, yes. If you only crave adrenaline, wait for a surf day.
