We hand boards to people on holiday most days of the week, and the same five things go wrong. None of them are dramatic. They just cost people a session, or a chunk of money they didn't need to spend.
Here they are, in the order they usually happen.
1. Booking in the week you fly
This is the big one, and it's worse in August than people expect.
A rental fleet is a fixed number of boards. Ours is four sizes of soft-top, and when the 7'8s are out, they're out — there's no back room. In the first two weeks of August we routinely can't take another 7'8 booking. The people who miss out are almost always the ones who messaged three days before arriving.
Book when you book your accommodation. You don't pay anything at that point, there's no deposit, and you can cancel free up to 72 hours after booking. Waiting costs you the choice of board and gains you nothing.
The flip side of the same mistake: booking one day. Our minimum is three days, and that's not us being difficult. A delivery, a fitting and a collection for a single afternoon doesn't work as a business. Most rental operations here have some version of that floor, and several have a full-week one.
2. Renting a board smaller than you should
Everyone thinks they're past the foamie. Almost nobody is.
The honest version: if you've surfed a handful of times, or you surf twice a year on holiday, a 7'8 or an 8'6 will get you more waves than a 6'6 will. Not slightly more. Several times more. Beach breaks on this coast are punchy and the paddle-outs are real, and the difference between a board that floats you and one that doesn't is the difference between catching waves and swimming.
The most common regret we hear is on day two, from someone who asked for the shortboard on day one.

3. Treating the wetsuit as optional
Portugal is not the Mediterranean. Atlantic water on the Costa Vicentina sits around 15–19°C for most of the year, and the wind off the ocean makes it feel cooler than the number reads.
What you actually want by season:
- 3/2mm — June to September
- 4/3mm — April, May and October
- 5/3mm — November to March
People book board-only in June because it's summer and €18 a day beats €28 a day, then last forty minutes in the water. Board-only exists for surfers who travel with their own suit. If you don't own one, the full package at €28/day or €150 for seven days includes a season-matched wetsuit, and it's the right call.
4. Not working out how the board gets to the water
A 7'8 does not fit inside a hire car. Neither does a 7'0. This surprises people at Faro arrivals roughly once a week.
Three ways out of it, in order of how much hassle they are:
Delivery. We bring the board to where you're staying and collect it at the end, free, anywhere in Aljezur, Arrifana, Vale da Telha, Monte Clérigo, Amoreira, Rogil or Carrapateira. The board never goes in your car. This is the whole reason the business exists.
Roof rack pads. If you want to drive to different spots yourself, soft pads strap to any hire car for €2 a day. Say so when you book and they come with the board.
Rent from somewhere you can walk to. Fine if you're staying in Arrifana. Less fine if your Airbnb is eight kilometres up a dirt track in Vale da Telha, which many of them are.
5. Comparing headline rates instead of what you'll actually pay
The number in the ad is rarely the number you pay.
Things that live outside the headline rate, all of which we've seen locally: a delivery fee added at the end, a card deposit held for the week, a seven-night minimum that makes a five-day trip cost seven days, a wetsuit priced separately from the board, and a pickup window that means driving into town twice.
The only comparison worth making is the delivered total for your actual dates, with everything included. Work that out for each option and the cheap one often stops being cheap. We wrote the full comparison of rental models here, including the maths on a five-day two-person booking.

How far ahead should I book a surfboard in Portugal?
For July and August, as soon as your accommodation is confirmed. The larger soft-tops go first and there is no way to conjure another one. Outside peak season a few days is usually enough. Booking early costs nothing here: no deposit, and free cancellation up to 72 hours after you book.
What size surfboard should I rent as a beginner?
A 7'8 funboard suits most adults learning or returning after a break; an 8'6 longboard if you're heavier or completely new. A 6'6 shortboard is for people who already surf regularly. If you get it wrong, our level-match guarantee covers a free swap after day one.
Do I need a wetsuit to surf in Portugal in summer?
Yes. Water on the Costa Vicentina runs about 15–19°C even in August, and the coastal wind makes it feel colder. A 3/2mm is right from June to September. Only skip the rental wetsuit if you're bringing your own.
Can I fit a rental surfboard in a hire car?
Not in a standard compact — a 7'0 or larger won't go inside. Either have the board delivered to your accommodation, or add roof rack pads (€2/day) and carry it on top.
Is it cheaper to rent from a shop or have a board delivered?
Compare the delivered total, not the daily rate. A walk-in shop can look cheaper per day and then cost you two drives into town plus a deposit. Our delivery is free across the Costa Vicentina with no minimum order, which is usually what closes the gap.
