Why We Don't Ask for Upfront Payment

Our booking flow doesn't collect card details before we confirm your gear. Here's why we do it that way, how you actually pay, and what it means for you when things change.

Nearly every surf-rental site on the internet asks you to pay first. Card details entered, money moved, confirmation email sent. If the surf doesn't work out, if the shop realises they don't have your size, if you need to reschedule — well, now you have to argue for a refund from a business that already has your money.

We do it the other way. You don't pay until we've confirmed your gear and dates. There's no card capture at booking, no deposit, no "reserve now with just €10." You send the request; we reply within 24 hours with a specific board recommendation and total; you approve; we send a payment link (or you pay in cash on arrival).

This is a deliberate policy, not laziness with our checkout software. Here's why it works better for both sides.

What "instant booking" actually costs you

Instant-book systems solve one problem — reserving inventory in real time — and create three others:

  1. You commit before we've matched you to the right board. Most systems let you pick a "medium beginner board" or similar generic tier. You don't know if that's actually right for your weight, height, and the swell forecast for your dates. You find out when the board arrives.
  2. Card details sit with a business you've never heard of. Portugal has a lot of small surf-rental businesses. Some of them use payment providers with murky refund policies. If something goes wrong you're chasing money through an intermediary.
  3. Cancellation windows are usually punishing. "24-hour cancellation window" from a business you booked three weeks ago means you have zero flexibility once the trip approaches. Real life doesn't work that way.

The tradeoff is small: you wait 24 hours for a reply instead of getting an instant confirmation. In exchange you get a specific human recommendation, a specific total, and no money moved until both sides agree.

How our booking actually flows

  1. You send a request via the contact form or WhatsApp. Include your dates, accommodation address, number of people, experience level, and any preferences. Or run the calculator on the homepage first and hit submit from there — the recommendation carries through.
  2. We reply within 24 hours (in EN, FR, DE, NL, or PT) with a specific gear recommendation, a total price, and any notes about your specific spot and season. If it's a complex booking (a group, a mixed-level party, a weird weather forecast) we might have follow-up questions.
  3. You approve. Reply "yes" or ask questions.
  4. We send a secure payment link — card, Apple Pay, iDEAL, Wero, or MB WAY. Or you tell us you'd rather pay in cash when we arrive with the boards. No deposit, no card-holding, no pre-authorization.
  5. We deliver. Board and wetsuit at your Airbnb, usually the evening before you start surfing.

Total commit from you before money moves: your dates, your address, and a reply-to-email. If anything about the trip changes between step 1 and step 4, we can adjust without either side involving a bank.

What "cash on arrival" really means

Cash on arrival isn't a red flag on our side. Portugal is a mostly-cash economy for small local businesses. Our delivery driver (usually me, sometimes a hire) shows up with the boards, chats about the surf forecast for the week, hands over the wetsuit, and takes the cash. It's how most of Aljezur's non-tourist economy works.

If you'd rather not carry €150 in euros from Faro airport, that's totally fine — a payment link goes to your email or WhatsApp, you tap the method you prefer, and you're done. The link accepts card (Visa/Mastercard/Amex), Apple Pay, iDEAL (Dutch), Wero (European), MB WAY (Portuguese), and standard credit/debit cards. You don't need to know or care which payment processor we use.

The trust math

From your side: You're taking a risk on us — that we'll actually show up with the right gear. If we don't, you're out no money because we haven't taken any. Zero downside on the payment axis.

From our side: We're taking a risk on you — that you'll actually be there when we deliver, and that you'll pay. In practice this has been fine. Aljezur is a small enough community that no-shows are rare, and the review-first booking flow already selects for people who read carefully and mean it.

The math works because we're a small, local, name-attached business (I'm Leon, I live here). If we screwed people over on payment, it would kill the business in a season. That accountability is worth more than any upfront charge.

What if you need to cancel or change?

Free cancellation up to 72 hours after booking, no questions asked. After that: the booking is confirmed and we've held stock for you. If the situation is real (flight cancelled, someone injured, weather flat and you'd rather come next month) we'll usually reschedule at no cost — we've done this dozens of times. The hard cutoff is 7 days before the start of the rental; inside that window we can't guarantee anything, and no-shows aren't refunded.

Between 72 hours and 7 days out, message us. We're not looking for a fight over deposits we don't have.
