A funboard—mini-mal or mid-length—usually sits near 7'0–8'0 and handles most holiday conditions without feeling like a tank or a toothpick. At Surf Rental Aljezur we stock 7'0 and 7'8 funboards among other sizes; here is what that shape actually does in the water.
What makes a board a funboard
Length in the low- to mid-seven foot range for many rental fleets.
Volume higher than a performance shortboard, lower than a classic longboard — enough paddle without full 8'6 swing weight.
Outline — often a rounded nose, moderate rocker, fairly wide midsection. Designed to catch waves and turn better than a log, more stable than a shortboard.
Not every brand uses the word “funboard” on the deck pad — it is a category, not a trademark.
Why funboards are the best all-round choice for many travellers
Aljezur’s beaches (Monte Clérigo, Arrifana, Amado) shift with sandbars and swell direction. A week might include knee-high runners and head-high walls — not XXL, but variable.
A funboard bridges those days better than extremes:
- More maneuverable than an 8'6 for tighter beach-break peaks
- More forgiving than a 6'6 if your paddling or timing is still inconsistent
If you are past absolute day one but not a confident shortboarder, the fun zone is often where progress feels fastest. First time surfing Portugal mindset still applies: position, patience, safety.
Who funboards suit
| Surfer | Fit |
|---|---|
| Adult beginner after a lesson or two | 7'8 often ideal |
| Lighter or younger quick learner | 7'0 can work |
| Improver returning after years off | 7'8 for wave count |
| Shortboarder wanting foam for travel | 7'0 feels less alien than 8'6 |
Heavy adults or very tall beginners may still prefer 8'6 — volume rules. See what surfboard should I rent for the full decision tree.
Limitations (honest)
Very small, weak swell — a longboard still wins wave count.
Steep, fast, hollow faces — a skilled shortboarder on appropriate hard equipment has an edge; a funboard can still work on many Costa Vicentina days, but it is not a Pipe tool.
Duck-diving — thick foam funboards are hard to sink; turtle roll and smart channel choice matter. How to duck dive explains why.
Session pacing on a funboard
Because funboards bridge sizes, improvers sometimes over-surf — they catch more waves per hour and tire faster than on a day spent fighting a shortboard. Two shorter sessions with food and hydration between often beat one marathon that ends in sloppy technique and sore shoulders. Pair that habit with post surf recovery and you will still be smiling on day six of the trip.
Our 7'0 and 7'8 soft-top funboards
Both are soft-top construction — same rationale as soft top vs hard board: safety, durability, predictable hire experience.
Rails are forgiving in a crowded lineup; the slick bottom is built for rental miles rather than glass-on finesse. That trade-off is exactly what most visitors want: fewer ding headaches, more time in the water. You still learn real surfing — just on equipment matched to holiday reality.
- 7'0 — snappier feel, slightly less paddle than 7'8; great if you are fit and light-to-medium build.
- 7'8 — extra glide and stability; default recommendation for many intermediate beginners and returning surfers.
Compare outline extremes in longboard vs shortboard — the funboard is literally between those stories.

Funboard vs fish?
“Fish” usually means a wide, short twin or quad — different design goals. Funboard here means mid-length 7–8ft all-rounder.
Can I learn from zero on a 7'0?
Possible for athletic learners; 7'8 or 8'6 is kinder for most first week surfers.
Is a funboard “slow”?
It is faster to paddle than a 6'6 short shape for most people — “slow” is usually technique, not the board category.
One board for a two-week trip?
7'8 is the classic answer for mixed conditions and improving riders — adjust if you are very light/heavy per our sizing post.
