Bodyboarding Aljezur: Beaches, Gear & Local Rentals

Bodyboarding Aljezur beaches: best spots, technique basics, shore breaks like Monte Clérigo — hire bodyboards from local surf shops; we do not carry them.

Bodyboarding is underrated. A good boogie board session in the right conditions is fast, fun, and teaches you how waves accelerate in shallow water — useful context if you later stand up on a surfboard. Around Aljezur, some days suit bodyboarding better than struggling on a shortboard in messy wind swell.

Important: Surf Rental Aljezur does not rent bodyboards or fins. We focus on soft-top surfboards and wetsuits with free delivery. For a bodyboard and possibly swim fins, walk into local surf shops in Aljezur, Arrifana, or nearby coastal villages — stock varies by season.

Why bodyboarding fits this coast

The Costa Vicentina mixes beach breaks and shore breaks. When waves dump steeply in shallow water, a low board and prone position can be safer and more controlled than attempting a stand-up drop on the wrong tide.

Bodyboarding is also a gateway: you learn timing, positioning, and respect for other water users without balancing on two feet immediately. Compare with first-time surfing in Portugal for the standing path.

Beaches people talk about

Conditions change daily — always check lifeguards, flags, and local advice before entering.

Monte Clérigo — Famous fun peaks; shore break on certain tides can be punchy — excellent for experienced bodyboarders, humbling for everyone else. Our Monte Clérigo surf guide covers the surf angle; bodyboarders use the same sand, often closer to shore.

Arrifana — Steeper, more serious when big. Bodyboarders who know currents and channels use it; beginners should stay in supervised zones and small days only. See Arrifana surf guide.

Amoreira — River mouth dynamics create varied sandbars; sometimes friendly reform waves, sometimes strong currents. Never underestimate outgoing tide near the river.

Odeceixe — Similar river-ocean mix; iconic scenery — read water movement before charging in.

What you need

  • Bodyboard sized roughly to your belly-to-chin height (shop staff help).

  • Leash attached to your wrist — non-negotiable.

  • Swim fins optional but transformative for catching waves and escaping currents.

  • Wetsuit — same seasons as surfing: 3/2 mm Jun–Sep, 4/3 mm Apr–May and Oct, 5/3 mm Nov–Mar. We rent wetsuits if you only need rubber; wetsuit guide Portugal explains thickness.

  • Sun protection — prone riders burn the back fast.

Renting locally (not from us)

Ask shops for daily bodyboard hire and whether fins are included. Early summer weekends sell out faster than midweek. If a shop is out, another village along the coast might have stock — worth a short drive.

Again: we do not stock bodyboards or SUPs — only 6'6, 7'0, 7'8, and 8'6 soft-top surfboards.

Technique basics (short version)

Position — Lie centred on the board, hips slightly forward of middle, hands gripping the nose rails.

Kick — With fins: long smooth kicks; without: fast flutter kicks as the wave approaches.

Take-off — Angle slightly toward the open face; use the inside rail and outside hand to trim along the wave.

Tuck — For steeper drops, pull elbows in and hold the line; do not stiff-arm the sand.

Bail safely — Protect your head with arms if tumbling; never dive head-first into shallow shore break.

Etiquette overlaps surfing

Do not drop in on surfers or other bodyboarders. Give way to riders already on the wave. The wave priority rules post is written for stand-up surfers but the ethics are identical.

Bodyboarders sometimes sit inside on purpose — closer to shore where waves break first — which can create tension if stand-up surfers think you are “snaking.” Communicate with a nod, yield when unsure, and remember lifeguards see the beach as one zone, not separate tribes.

If you progress from bodyboarding to standing, our soft-tops (6'6 through 8'6) bridge the gap better than a twitchy short hardboard for most holiday surfers — see when to upgrade from a foamie before you buy something impractical for local beach breaks.

FAQ

Is bodyboarding safer than surfing?

Not automatically. Shore break injuries (neck, shoulder, sand impacts) happen. Small, supervised days are safer than chasing heavy dumpers alone.

Do I need fins?

Not mandatory for tiny whitewater play; highly recommended for real waves and currents.

Can kids bodyboard?

Yes, with short boards, leashes, adult supervision, and shallow friendly zones. Surfing with kids touches family logistics.

Why doesn’t Surf Rental Aljezur rent bodyboards?

We keep the van focused on surfboards and wetsuits we maintain to a standard we know. Local shops fill the bodyboard gap.

What about when waves are flat?

Flat means flat — swim, hike the Fisherman's Trail, or nap honestly.
