The shoulder seasons — autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) — offer the best balance of wave quality, water temperature, and empty lineups in Aljezur. Autumn delivers warm water with building Atlantic swell. Spring brings consistent waves, wildflowers on the cliffs, and the coast almost to yourself.
Why the off-season works
Summer in Aljezur is great for beginners: small waves, warm water, long days. But it also means the Nortada wind blowing onshore by late morning, busy parking at Arrifana and Monte Clérigo, and the need for dawn patrol to get clean conditions.
Step outside those months and almost everything improves. The wind patterns become more favourable — lighter, more variable, with frequent offshore mornings that groom the swell into clean lines. The crowds thin from busy to sparse. Accommodation prices drop. And the waves get better.
You don't need to fight for a parking spot. You don't need to set an alarm for 5:30am. You can surf at 10am on a Tuesday and share the beach with a handful of people.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is the golden window, and experienced surfers plan their year around it.
September still feels like summer. The water holds its warmth (18-20°C), a 3/2mm wetsuit is comfortable, and the first autumn swells start to push through. The summer crowds thin noticeably after the first week. Late September sessions — warm water, head-high swell, offshore winds, five people in the water — are as good as it gets in Europe.
October is the peak of the shoulder season. Swell becomes more consistent (4-8ft), water temperature drops to 16-18°C, and you'll transition to a 4/3mm wetsuit by mid-month. The tourist infrastructure stays open but the beaches feel private. Arrifana's right-hander starts to light up on solid NW swells.
November marks the transition to winter. Swell size increases, the first proper Atlantic storms arrive, and the water cools to 15-16°C. You'll want a 5/3mm wetsuit with boots by November. The trade-off for the cold is power — November waves are serious. The Aljezur Sweet Potato Festival (late November) gives you a reason to get out of the water, too.
Spring: March to May
Spring is quieter and more varied than autumn, with its own appeal.
March is still winter-ish. Consistent swell (4-8ft), cold water (15-16°C), and a 4/3mm wetsuit with boots. But the days are getting longer, the storms less frequent, and the calm spells between systems produce beautiful conditions. You'll share the lineup with a few locals and nobody else.
April is the sweet spot of spring. The swell mellows to a more manageable 3-6ft, water starts warming (16-17°C), and you can ditch the boots. The cliffs above the beaches are covered in wildflowers — it's genuinely stunning. The Nortada hasn't kicked in yet, so wind is light and variable. A 4/3mm wetsuit keeps you comfortable all session.
May bridges into summer. Water reaches 17-18°C, swell becomes lighter and more westerly (3-5ft), and a 3/2mm wetsuit works on warmer days. The first summer visitors start to appear, but nothing like July or August. It's an excellent month for all levels — enough swell to keep intermediates engaged, gentle enough for beginners to learn.

Who the off-season suits
Autumn (Sep-Nov): Intermediate and advanced surfers get the most from autumn. The swell builds through the season, rewarding experience and confidence. September is accessible for competent beginners; by November, you need to know what you're doing.
Spring (Mar-May): More forgiving across the board. April and May are genuinely good for all levels — manageable swell, warming water, and uncrowded beaches. March suits intermediates and above who don't mind the cold.
Both seasons are ideal for couples and families who want to avoid the summer rush. Self-catering accommodation in Vale da Telha and Aljezur town is significantly cheaper outside July-August, and you'll have the full coastline largely to yourselves.
Practical advantages
Accommodation: Expect 30-50% lower prices compared to peak summer. More availability, less pressure to book months ahead.
Parking: A non-issue. In summer, the Arrifana car park fills by 10am. In October, you park wherever you like.
Wind: The strong Nortada that dominates summer afternoons is weaker or absent in the shoulder months. You get longer windows of clean conditions — no need to plan your entire day around the wind.
Restaurant and café culture: Everything stays open through October in Aljezur. By November some seasonal spots close, but the year-round restaurants and cafés are still running. Spring sees everything reopen by late March.
Wetsuit note
We carry wetsuits for every season. For autumn visitors, we'll match you with a 3/2mm or 4/3mm depending on your dates. Spring visitors get the same — and we swap gear if the weather shifts during your stay. We also carry boots for late autumn and early spring mornings.
Frequently asked questions
Is September still considered off-season?
Barely. Early September still has a summer feel — warm water, some crowds, smaller swell. But by mid-to-late September, the summer tourists have left and the autumn swell pattern starts. It's the most accessible off-season month and a great choice if you want warm water without summer crowds.
Do I need a car in the off-season?
Yes, and this is true year-round in Aljezur. The beaches are spread across 20km of coastline with no public transport between them. A car lets you check conditions at multiple spots and choose the best option each day. We deliver gear to your accommodation so you don't need roof racks for boards.
Are the surf schools open in the off-season?
Most operate through October, and some run year-round by appointment. Spring schools typically reopen in March or April. If you want a lesson to start your trip, ask us and we'll connect you with an instructor who's active during your dates.
What if a storm hits during my autumn trip?
Atlantic storms bring big swell, but they also bring calm days before and after. The pattern is usually 2-3 days of storm, then 2-3 days of clean, powerful surf on the residual swell. Arrifana is the most sheltered spot and handles big NW swell better than the open beach breaks.
